Hey Gang!
Read 11-yr-old Amy’s story below. This is a Here to Serve family you can help too!
As you all know, I was poised to run the Hollywood Half Marathon for Here to Serve on April 6th…and then I got sick. 🙁 But no worries, I have great news to report…the ENTIRE CAST of “The Rainmaker” will now run/walk with me for 16 miles, one mile for each family that we can support with your help on April 17th on the Santa Monica Boardwalk at 10 a.m.! 🙂 We have the entire cast supporting Here to Serve so we hope all of you will join us in supporting the work they do too. Many of you may not know this wonderful charity that assists families who have a child going through a life-threatening medical crisis and why I feel compelled to support them and ask you to do the same. So I have developed this newsletter to share with you more about what they do and the families they help.
My mother is a survivor of ovarian cancer
As a nurse, she was well-versed in the medical terminology that most of us find intimidating and our family was lucky to have a strong support network. Even so, it was a scary experience; one that countless families go through every single day. Here to Serve’s mission is to help those families. They offer support not only to those experiencing the crisis, but to family members and caregivers as well. They are an invaluable program and I am so honored to be running on their behalf.

Amy’s Story:

Amy, an 11-year-old gifted athlete and straight-A student who was accepted into the summer gifted program at UC Riverside, suffered two strokes from an AVM (an abnormal collection of blood vessels in the brain) on Christmas Eve and then again on New Year’s Eve 2012. She was in a coma for weeks…unable to speak or move when she finally regained consciousness.

Amy went from a gifted student and athlete to having to relearn how to talk, walk, read and write. Previously Amy’s life revolved around school and sports. Her South Bay Force soccer team won first place in their league. She was training for USTA sanctioned tennis tournaments, a sport she had been playing since she was four.

Her life, and that of her mom, dad and brother, did an about face as they started 2013. They had nowhere to turn until Children’s Hospital Los Angeles referred them to Here to Serve. A care community was set up for Amy and her family by Here to Serve and other nonprofits were referred to help them adjust to their new life. Here to Serve helped fill out forms and provide respite for Amy’s mom. They received child care, meals, dog walking and help with laundry and finances.

All this and much more as a direct result of Here to Serve’s programs and services.

The Rainmaker is poised to help too!

In addition to the Hollywood Half Marathon, all of the proceeds from the play I’m in, The Rainmaker, for the night of April 13, will be donated to Here to Serve! The Rainmaker is playing at the:
