HURRICANE ODILE

On September 14 Hurricane Odile struck the tip of the Baja peninsula as a Category 3 “monster” storm. With wind speeds exceeding 125 mph, Cabo San Lucas and San Jose Del Cabo sustained a direct hit, causing massive destruction throughout the region, leaving a quarter million people without electricity. Thousands are homeless and in need of immediate aid. As a result of the storm the normal delivery of safe water has been severely interrupted for many area residents.

It’s very disappointing that the media neglects to report what is going on at the end of Baja California. They have reported for years on natural disasters in countries all over the world, yet in our neighboring country of Mexico, in an area that houses many retirees of the U.S.A., and even more people who live down there to serve all of them, there is no ask for aid for an area that has been so devastated by the worst hurricane to hit the area since the 1940s.

Project Save Our Surf has many friends in this area that have lost their homes, some of them built with retirement funds. We know people that have lost their Bed & Breakfasts and businesses. Along side the resort life is a strong presence of indigenous people who have been devastated by this storm and whom have even less resources to rebuild and weather these intermittent days without aid.

Project Save Our Surf is creating a call to action and organizing an emergency relief effort aimed at delivering clean water, water filters and basic supplies to those hardest hit in this natural disaster. PSOS president Karon Pardue and PSOS Co Founder Tanna Frederick will be traveling with a crew to provide fresh clean water and supplies. Currently PSOS board member, Roberto Chuy Madrigal is working with the Mexican Consulate to receive updated information about conditions and about the best ways to get into the area. While communication is spotty we’ve learned that most of the families effected are without homes, food, water, clothing, sanitary items, the bare necessities of life.

What are our goals?

Immediate Needs: We are identifying the most critical necessities that the community members need to survive in the initial days following Hurricane Odile. We will open our facilities to the community providing shelter, food, drinking water and other basic support.

Long-term Rebuilding: Once we have moved past the disaster relief phase of this project, we will be planning with our local partners to identify the most critical projects in the rebuilding effort. Infrastructure, basic housing, and recovery support programs will be prioritized based on our available funding.

So far Project Save Our Surf has learned that the basic immediate supplies needed are clean water, diapers, baby formula, canned food, bags of rice, soap, personal hygiene supplies and new blankets. Currently PSOS is excepting cash donations to buy water filters, these supplies, and whatever is needed to mobilize the crew and travel. In the near future we will be listing drop off locations where supplies can be donated.
